Un equipo del Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) descubrió vestigios de un muelle y un canal de la época prehispánica mientras supervisaba las obras de construcción de un paso a desnivel en la avenida Chapultepec, una de las principales arterias de la Ciudad de México. Los restos fueron encontrados en lo que alguna vez fue la playa de una península situada al pie del Cerro del Chapulín.
El hallazgo fue realizado por un grupo de especialistas liderados por María de Lourdes López Camacho, responsable del Proyecto Arqueológico Bosque, Cerro y Castillo de Chapultepec, quien indicó que se encontraron varias secciones de un cauce artificial y un pequeño puerto. Se cree que este puerto era utilizado para el arribo y salida de canoas que se dirigían al lago de Texcoco.
López Camacho calificó el descubrimiento como una suerte, dado que la zona ha sido profundamente intervenida desde finales del siglo XIX, cuando desapareció el pueblo de indios de San Miguel Chapultepec. En 2023, se encontraron restos de un asentamiento prehispánico en la misma área, cerca de la estación Chapultepec del Sistema de Transporte Colectivo Metro.
El asentamiento, correspondiente al periodo Posclásico Tardío (1200-1521 d.C.), se encuentra alineado con el canal, lo que sugiere que existía un camino que conectaba con esta vía principal, ya que los «caminos de agua» frecuentemente corrían paralelos a los de tierra.
Entre los vestigios encontrados, se hallaron restos botánicos típicos de depósitos lacustres, así como cerámica, destacando piezas de carácter ritual que posiblemente fueron ofrendadas al agua en el Posclásico Tardío. También se encontraron objetos del periodo Colonial Temprano (1521-1620 d.C.) y materiales del siglo XX.
El canal, que aparece en el Mapa de Uppsala de aproximadamente 1550, originalmente era un río que fluía desde el sur del cerro y desembocaba en un embalse. Con el tiempo, fue transformado culturalmente, primero en un canal navegable, luego en un caño a inicios del virreinato, y finalmente, a mediados del siglo XVIII, en el acueducto de Chapultepec, que contaba con 904 arcos y abastecía de agua a la fuente del Salto del Agua.
Liliana Márquez Escoto, jefa de excavación, señaló que en el centro de la exploración se encontraron concentraciones de restos botánicos característicos de los depósitos lacustres, como semillas y maderas. Mientras tanto, la restauradora Norma García Huerta destacó que están trabajando en la restauración de piezas cerámicas, entre las cuales figuran fragmentos rituales que fueron ofrendados al cuerpo de agua en tiempos prehispánicos, así como objetos de los periodos Colonial Temprano y siglo XX.
Este descubrimiento subraya la constante ocupación de la zona a lo largo de los siglos y la importancia histórica del área que actualmente alberga una de las zonas más transitadas de la Ciudad de México.
