Nissan Motor dijo el jueves que su producción global cayó por quinto mes consecutivo en octubre, liderada por reducciones en la mayoría de sus centros de fabricación, excepto México.
Aunque las ventas globales también cayeron por séptimo mes, las ventas en el mercado principal de Nissan, Estados Unidos, crecieron por primera vez en tres meses. A principios de este mes, Nissan anunció planes para eliminar 9,000 puestos de trabajo y el 20% de su capacidad de fabricación a nivel mundial para reducir costos, después de que el tercer mayor fabricante de automóviles japonés detrás de Toyota y Honda. Sufrieron caídas de ventas en China y Estados Unidos.
La amenaza de los aranceles estadounidenses ahora empaña los esfuerzos de reestructuración del fabricante de automóviles en dificultades. La producción mundial de Nissan en octubre disminuyó un 6% respecto al mismo mes del año anterior, hasta los 290,848 vehículos. La producción tanto en Estados Unidos como en China cayó un 15%, mientras que la producción en Gran Bretaña se desplomó un 23% y la producción en Japón se contrajo un 4%.
Un punto positivo fue México, donde la producción aumentó un 12% hasta 70,382 vehículos. Eso significa que casi uno de cada cuatro automóviles Nissan en todo el mundo se fabricó en México el mes pasado.
Sin embargo, esto podría verse bajo presión ya que el presidente electo de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, dijo esta semana que impondría un arancel del 25% a las importaciones de Canadá y México al asumir el cargo en enero. Nissan ha exportado unos 300,000 vehículos de México a Estados Unidos este año y seguirá de cerca los planes arancelarios, dijo el presidente ejecutivo Makoto Uchida poco después de la reelección de Trump.
En octubre, Nissan vendió un 13% más de vehículos en Estados Unidos, su primer crecimiento desde julio, encabezado por el sedán compacto Sentra. Las ventas de Nissan también aumentaron en México y Canadá, pero cayeron a tasas de dos dígitos en China y Europa, lo que resultó en una caída del 3% a nivel mundial.
